Here are 50 concept sketches of the possible outcomes of the multiple online identity management project. They were finished in one-day’s brainstorm and the purpose of this exercise is to explore broader possibilities and encourage more innovative elements in this project.

Why disclaimers?- It’s legal technicality

Here is one interesting blog post talking about legal’s effect on federated identity which relates to my IMPrints project topic. It gives the example and explain that why Bank X could not give identity proofing of the same customer which has been passed in Bank Y before. It’s indeed annoying when I need to register to some system that I must prove myself with intricate evidences and processes no matter how many times I’ve done before. And this article helps me rethink some issues of identity management convenience.

As the author said, “why the disclaimer? It’s a legal technicality” and the article explains the above problem that “banks’ lawyers are saying to all institutions, sure, we know you’re all putting customers through the same identity proofing protocols, but unless there is a contract in place, you must not rely on another bank’s process; you have to do it yourself.”

For solution, the author said “Bank X could provide a digitally notarised copy of some of the elements of the identity proofing”. It’s close to some ideas in my mind for the IMPrints Project. It’s quite difficult to build one single system to synchronize all the data across platforms because of huge amounts of security and privacy issues, however, maybe one “digital directory” or “digital document”of personal data and verification could help make user’s management of identity easier. Users, online platforms and organizations could still keep their original authority to deal with IDM issues, but some duplication of labor may be reduced by digital processes and online sync.

Ideas of identity management-130211

These are two initial ideas of identity management, they are not my final research direction but just some thinking to be recorded. More context research is continuing.

1) This idea is to create one document which contains all individual data such as facebook profile image, life journey and self introductions. Choosing specific data for different websites and apps then people will not need to edit personal profiles for various requirements again and again.

2) This idea is for amounts of smart mobile devices which may appear in the near future. When people own many devices and just save passwords in those devices, then maybe one interface for loging on those devices can replace so many different accounts and passwords for various networks.
